Executive Summary

Management education has grown rapidly in India over the last two decades and it continues to do so. Bangalore city alone accounts for more than 120 B-Schools catering to wide disciplines. The city also has large student population under the management studies area. The city has to its credit IIMB, the country’s second best management institute alongside numerous autonomous institutions, affiliated colleges, deemed universities and distance education providers catering to the need.

The following concerns are the main trigger to take up this monograph project:

The magnitude in which management education sector is growing puts a question mark on effectiveness and competency of faculty who is vital in the entire process and what processes needs to be introduced and strengthened with respect to faculty selection, training and retention. How to build the competencies and nurture the same for long term sustainability?

This leads us to a vital concept of teachers’ competency mapping and assessment. The competency mapping is well accepted in the industry and many important functions of Human Resources are linked with competencies. In education sector, particularly in management education, there is no evidence of structured competency mapping and assessment. It exists in an indirect way. i.e faculty assessment criterion and student feedback, research involvement etc. are considered seriously. If the concept of competency mapping is used scientifically then the faculty performance could be enhanced. This monograph also makes an attempt to compare desired competencies as perceived by the under graduate and post graduate management faculty members. This would help the Administrators, Heads of Departments, Deans and Management to consider competency mapping process for their faculty members.
